for what appeared today
in our back garden.

to the sun, the rain
last winter’s snow
and someone’s
long ago thought
that a rose bush
needed to live
just there.
All gratitude
for the hands
(not mine)
that fed and watered
pruned and nurtured
that root stock hybrid
from early planting
to hardy maturity.
All joy
inside this heart
born anew,
intoxicated,
by a bounty
of scarlet petals
and rare perfume.
